Indian dances cover different dance forms that are performed in theatres, temples and other  special occasions. The dances are often representations of Hindu deities such as Shiva, Krishna and Kali.

There are  hundreds of different Indian dances,  both traditional and modern, including the Bhangra, Ghumura, Chhau, Sambalpuri, Bihu and Garba. Today, traditional Indian dances are still  performed in cinemas, theatres, and local and international shows..

Indian dances are divided into three categories: festival dances, classical dances and folk dances.

Festival Dances

Dover Lane – This dance is accompanied by Indian classical music. The Dover Lane is performed during  cultural events in  theatres in the months of December and January. Dancers undergo serious training to master the steps and  efficiently portray the essence of the dance.
Hampi Dance – The Hampi dance is performed in Hampi, Karnataka in the months of October and November. This dance is a famous tourist attraction in Karnataka, and thus the government organizes a theatre act for it each year.

Classical Dances

Bharatnatyam Dance – This dance is the native dance of the Tamil Nadus in  the southern state of India. The bharatnatyam dance is one of India’s most popular forms of dances  performed during special occasions. It uses four dance techniques: Karanas, hastas, adavus and bhedas or eye movement.
Kathak – This dance originated in northern India. The Kathak dance is  performed in Indian village temples and squares. The dance portrays  mythological and moral tales based on  ancient Indian scriptures.
Kathakali – This dance is derived from two other Indian dances, which are the Ramanattam and Krishnanattam. The word “attam” means enactment. The dance tells the stories of the Hindu gods Krishna and Rama.

Folk Dances

GaurDance – The Gaur dance is a folk dance in Central India. It is  performed by  men and women wearing headdresses and peacock feathers.
Dumhal – The Dumhal is a Kashmir folk dance performed by dancers in long robes of vibrant colors and beaded conical caps. This dance is performed during special occasions in theatres and cultural centers.

Indians are very good dancers and their performances are usually dedicated to their gods and goddesses. The dances are also accompanied by music that has a religious or holy message that is dedicated to their deities.
